Coffee with Characters- Colten Cavanaugh featured in Eric (The Kingsbrier Quintuplets no.1) by Jody Kaye

Character Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself!
My name is Colton Cavanaugh.

Tell us who you are and what you do!
I’m the youngest of the Kingsbrier Quintuplets.

What do you do for a living?
I’m in the Navy.

How old are you?
Old enough to have figured my shit out.

Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?
Let’s see. There’s five of us kids. We were raised in my grandfather’s ranch, but my dad refused to take a penny of his father-in-law’s money. So it was oddly middle class, living in a big-ass house. People we sure we were snots—and we were—but only in terms of getting into stuff we shouldn’t. I had a problem with my fists. The Navy righted that when I got a sense of purpose. One of my brothers and my two sisters are married now. My eldest brother, Adam’s been lying to our family. As luck would have it, I’m the only one who knows the golden boy ain’t so golden after all.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?
In high school I had a mohawk. Now I prefer a skull trim. Oh, I have green eyes too. All us quints do. Guess it’s actually not that distinguishable, huh?

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?
Nope. A few gunshot wounds, though. One’s above my ear where a bullet grazed my scalp.
What would I love the most about you?

If you could have a superpower what would it be, and why?
A reset button.

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?
Spit it out. Say what you mean. Even if it’s mean. Least then you know who you’re dealing with.

What would I love the most about you?
Kids like me.

What would I hate the most about you?
I’m quiet.

What is your idea of a perfect day?
Sharpening the blades on the old tractor and getting the thing running so that I can mow a field all by my lonesome. Parties and family are great, but when your family is that big sometimes ya just gotta get way from them.

What’s the best part about being in love?
Haven’t figured that out yet. I can tell you the worst part; Her not feeling the same.

What is your greatest fear?
Not scared of anything, except my momma getting a death notification. But at that point, I won’t be all that worried, will I?

Hot weather or cold?
HOT.

Dogs or cats?
Sheep? Oh, shit! That came out wrong. (laughs) We have sheep on the ranch that acts more like a dog. So maybe I shoulda just said dog to begin with?

Who was your first love?
My brother-in-law’s sister, Colette.

What’s your number one relationship deal breaker and why?
It’s me not you. No really. It is me. I’ve watched too many team members families fall apart while they’re deployed. I just don’t trust it’ll be different for me.

How do you take your eggs in the morning?
By the dozen.

Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?
Not happening.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Not a quintuplet. More specifically, not an identical twin in a set of quintuplets. Like that sharing, sibling rivalry, and brothers being smarter than you shit could get any worse? Yeah, let’s throw in one of em looking just like you so that every adult can mistake you for him.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
Everything that I’d normally do.

What is the one food you can’t live without?
Peach pie.

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?
Stephen Amell

Coffee with characters-Elizabeth Avery from “The Sixth Grader” Gate Trilogy Book 1 by K.T. Munson

Character Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself!

This is Elisabeth at the start of The Sixth Gate.

Tell us who you are and what you do!

My name is Elisabeth Avery and I have a doctoral degree in Fringe Sciences with a specialty in ectoplasm. If you don’t know what this is, I basically deal with spirits.

What do you do for a living?

I have created a few items from my research such as a two-way device that can allow two people to talk from opposite ends of the world. Patents and investments in companies are the primary way I make a living. From time to time I also take clients who are having spiritual disturbances. However, my most recent accomplishment is soon to be unveiled, proving my theorems once and for all: The dead can walk amongst us. Naturally with the proper housing and containment.

How old are you?

Age is tricky when you are only half-mortal, but about thirty by planet dweller standards, although I only look to be in my early twenties.

Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?

I’m the adoptive daughter of a reformed demon, Malthael, who is presently the Gate Guardian for Ashlad. Most people don’t know this but there are multiple worlds and the Netherworld is connected to all of them. My papa is just one of the Gate Guardians on just one of those planets. Life is great until someone tries to kill me.

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

That isn’t a polite subject, but not particularly, no.

If you could have a superpower what would it be, and why?

Is pulling souls out of bodies a superpower? What about seeing the dead and the spirit world? Yes? Well, then, I already have one of those and it isn’t all it is cracked up to be. Although it would be nice to understand people better. It is very tricky to comprehend all of their complex facets.

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

When people judge me for what I was born as not who I am as a person. When they do that to anyone, particularly since actions speak louder than words, I get annoyed.

What would I love the most about you?

I don’t know. I don’t deal with planet dwellers very often, but I like to think I’d be an excellent friend if given the chance. Also, I’m pretty clever. At least the demons’ I live with think so, and they’ve been alive a long time so they are likely correct.

What would I hate the most about you?

I’m dangerous to be around. Even hugs are tricky unless you are a non-mortal. Also, when my mind is made up it is very difficult for me to change my mind again. Some people may call that stubborn but I like to consider myself a determined person.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

I’d like to spend the day with my mother since she died soon after I was born. I’ve always wondered what she was like. Would she be proud of me? I like to think she would be.

What’s the best part about being in love?

I wouldn’t know. I like to think it would be finding someone who understands you. Who likes you because of all your traits, even your faults. Although the books I’ve read seem to make love out to be some great thing. If I’m lucky maybe one day I’ll find out.

What is your greatest fear?

That I extract someone spirit and can’t put it back.

Hot weather or cold?

Somewhere in the middle, although I do love snow. Nothing like the remaking of a city overnight with a blanket of pristine snow.

Dogs or cats?

I love my Netherhounds, Duke and Nathan. Are they like dogs right? Although I’m not against cats.

Who was your first love?

Allecter Yvish invented the first pair of goggles that could see into the spirit world. I was obsessed for weeks. Then it was Edward Highborn. He is the hero in one of my favorite books. Oh, did you mean a living, non-fictional person?

What’s your number one relationship deal breaker and why?

They don’t accept my family; my very unconventional, mostly demon family.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Normal. I still kind of want that. Although my abilities allow me an edge in the fringe sciences world, I’ve always wondered what it was like to be a simple Planet Dweller

What is the one food you can’t live without?

Tea. Tea, both hot and cold, is the thing that comforts and heals. Both physically and mentally.

Character Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself!

Tell us who you are and what you do!

My name is Willow and I’m a psychology student.

What do you do for a living?

Is professional student a thing? That’s where I’m at right now.

How old are you?

A lady never tells… 😉

Tell us your story. What is it about and what role do you play?

I’m assigned with Pierce to complete a group project. Best and worst time of my life. Lol

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

My curly long locks!

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

Nope, but I wish to have a couple tattoos.

If you could have a superpower what would it be, and why?

To heal the mind. I don’t want people to go through unseen illnesses like me.

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

Just overall rude. Or assuming things about me.

What would I love the most about you?

Probably my T-shirt collection. I love graphic tees.

What would I hate the most about you?

Damn. Didn’t think we were gonna dive into this. Maybe just the way I think. And overthink.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

Anyday that depression or anxiety isn’t bringing me down. A day with my guy, my dog, and a sunset.

What’s the best part about being in love?

The feeling. The comfort and warmth that it brings me. I needed it. He keeps me grounded.

Hot weather or cold?

Cold

Dogs or cats?

Dogs

 Who was your first love?

Read my story. 😉

What’s your number one relationship deal breaker and why?

Maybe someone who doesn’t take mental health seriously. It’s a real problem and close to my heart.

How do you take your eggs in the morning?

Over easy. I hate scrambled!

Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Hm! I don’t have anyone off the top of my head. I would feel flattered and if I don’t like them back, I’d feel terrible.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I didn’t have a set career. The one that would allow me to help others.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

Recreate my perfect day. Or sing in the rain.

What is the one food you can’t live without?

Cheese!! Is that weird?

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

I’d have to think on that. Maybe Emma Watson?

The Sweet Spot by Naomi Springthorp

Character Interview

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself!

Huh, my name is Rick Seno.

Tell us who you are and what you do!

I’m the catcher for the San Diego Seals professional baseball team and I have a non-profit organization for kids camps.

What do you do for a living?

Play baseball

How old are you?

I’m 28

Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?

I’m the hero, which is funny to say because I don’t feel like a hero. I just do my job and lead my team.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

I don’t think there’s anything special about me. I’ve been told I have the best beard in the league. Naomi keeps telling me I have clear blue eyes, I think they distract from her writing.

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

No

If you could have a superpower what would it be, and why?

Invincibility, so all the balls and bats that hit me would bounce off and not leave bruises.

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

I hate liars and people that are fake

What would I love the most about you?

Chicks seem to love my ass

What would I hate the most about you?

Probably my work schedule and the fact that I’m a ballplayer. It’s not the reality that people think.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

A long drive with my girl at my side, followed by a night in her bed.

What’s the best part about being in love?

It’s hard for me to contain my grin. I never thought I’d be in love. I had honestly given up. The best part? I’ve found it and I’m never letting it go.

What is your greatest fear?

100mph fastball to the head

Hot weather or cold?

I like warm weather. Nothing like the sun shining on the baseball field.

Dogs or cats?

We always had dogs. Mom was allergic to cats.

Who was your first love?

I’ve never loved anyone before Sherry. I thought I did, but I was wrong. Well, unless you count the poster of Heidi Klume I had on my bedroom wall in high school, but I think that was more lust.

What’s your number one relationship deal breaker and why?

Secrets. It’s hard to get over when you’ve been cheated on.

How do you take your eggs in the morning?

However, Sherry makes them. Usually an omelet.

Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

We don’t have secrets. I don’t kiss and tell.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always wanted to be a baseball player. I focus on what I want and go get it.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

Spoil my girl and knock her up.

What is the one food you can’t live without?

Whipped cream

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Coffee With Characters: Marc Ross Blaque Beauty and the Billionaire

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do! Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role? My name is Marc Ross and I am the male lead in Blaque Beauty and the Billionaire.
What do you do for a living?

I am a (very) successful property developer and hotelier. My mother would say I am a work-a-holic and she would probably be right. My father and grandfather were both developers and it’s in my blood. There’s nothing like the feeling of conceptualizing a hotel or a residential or commercial space and seeing that vision come to life. My properties are almost like real people to me, with their own personalities and characters. I’m also a tech start-up investor.
Erin

How old are you?
39 years young!

Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?
I am the guy who was lucky enough to meet and fall head over heels with the amazing Marlee Winters. She’s unlike any woman I have ever met and It’s going to take a bit of doing for her to see that her first impressions of me are not wrong. But she’s worth it!

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?
I’ve been told I have beautiful eyes. I actually got them from my dad, who was rather embarrassed by them because he was a no-nonsense man who didn’t like unnecessary attention. Our eyes are a weird sort of medium blue with darker blue in the irises. It’s not something I think about much until someone mentions it but, yeah, it’s kind of cool.

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?
Yes, I have a tattoo on my left shoulder blade of an archangel in memory of my older brother Philip who died in a skiing accident in Switzerland. I also have a tattoo of an Egyptian Ankh below my left ribcage. I got it on a spring break trip to Alexandria with my best friend Everett.

Would you ever want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do together?
You know what, I would actually. She is a homebody and I think she should get out more. We both have a love for art, French cuisine and classical architecture so I would fly her to the South of France for a castle tour. Knowing her she would find a way to incorporate it into a new book!

If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?
I wouldn’t mind the ability to read minds. It would have saved me a lot of trouble and money over the years, lol. I can’t think of anything else. I’m a very fortunate individual who has been given opportunities to do a lot of good in the world. But the ability to know exactly what people are all about, what they really want or need or what they’re afraid of could be pretty useful.

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?
I’m not the most patient person, lol. I don’t like when people don’t know what they want or what they need. To me it means they haven’t taken more time to figure out who they are and what makes them tick. I’ve learned that if you don’t have a strong sense of yourself there are people out there who will be happy to try and define you. I also don’t like phonies. Wealthy people seem to attract superficial people so I’ve gotten to the point where people who are honest and genuinely kind with integrity attract me the most.

What would I love the most about you?
Lol, I’m probably the only billionaire you’ll ever meet with a separate kitchen just for baking – I love to cook! I created a special cupcake filling just for Marlee. Her dad is from the South and her mom is Jamaican so I used passionfruit, mango and strawberries to make a one of a kind dessert for her parents’ 40th wedding anniversary party.

What would I hate the most about you?
Oh wow! Honesty is the best policy, right? I can be a little possessive, as in a lot. I’m not controlling but I’m not big on sharing the people I care about. My mom says I’ve always been that way lol. I should also learn to be a better listener. I’ve gotten used to giving orders lol.
Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
Yes, probably a little too accurately – it got me into some hot water!

What is your idea of a perfect day?
Spending time with my dreamgirl – basically convincing her to let me send my plane for her for weekends at the lodge. She’s also really focused on her career. We’re both very active. I’ve gotten her into hiking and she’s gotten me into trail riding. So a perfect day would be riding in the Rockies, dinner at an inn tucked away in the mountains and then a game of strip Scrabble by the fire in our suite. We have yet to finish a game 😉
What is your greatest fear?
Wasting my opportunities, my potential. My father and brother left way too soon and now it’s all on me. They were both good men, strong men who believed you haven’t lived unless you leave something good behind. I can die happy if I’ve done that.
Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?
Whoa! Um, well, a few months ago I would have hoped that person was Marlee! Now I know it is so, yeah, I’m really in a good place now. I’m afraid, however, that you’re referring to my ex. That situation is so absolutely over and I guess I would just say that I wish this level of happiness I now have with Marlee for everyone else out there.
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A property developer like my father and grandfather. I was the one kid you did not want to play Monopoly with!
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today? Honestly, spend the day with my mom and my sweetheart. We would simply spend the day reaffirming what we mean to each other.
What is the one food you can’t live without?
Sushi!
If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you
Lol, tough one…maybe Jakob Dylan? He’s not an actor so is that cheating? Okay, maybe a less squinty version of Eddie Cibrian lol.

Special Edition Coffee With Characters Cover Reveal

ASGfE Kindle Edition (1)
Thank you so much for joining us today Ellie!

Can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Ellie Whitmore. Well, El’iadrylline Whitmore, but not even mom uses my full name and she’s the one who saddled me with it. I was born in London, but currently reside in New York, where I attend university.

How old are you?
I’ve just turned twenty-one.

Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?
Oh boy, my role. I’m only just finding that out. You see, not long ago, I thought my biggest worry was the organic chem final I’d just failed. It’s a required class for environmental engineering and I’d hoped to one day use my degree and social status (my parents are pretty well known celebrities) to make a difference in the world. But apparently, I’m a space alien. Not only that, I’m some sort of “chosen one” and I’m supposed to save a whole planetary system from an evil emperor. I still haven’t quite reconciled that in my mind yet. I mean, really, me?

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?
My spots. Ugh. I have these marks all over my body, kind of like freckles, but they’re really bright white and they kind of form these geometric patterns that are definitely not random. Mom tried to explain them away as Vitiligo (that’s the skin condition Michael Jackson had), but no, they’re communication diodes and apparently a trait I share with my birth father’s people.

The geometric patterns on your skin, do they do anything?
They do quite a bit, actually. I can transfer information to my ship and I can silently communicate with another Eidyn through touch. Unfortunately, they also broadcast my emotional state to anyone who understands Eidyssic diode speak, which is kind of embarrassing. Especially when I’m supposed to be saving the world and my mind wanders off to how hot a guy is. Supposedly, I’ll eventually learn to control this. Hopefully soon.

What was it like growing up with famous parents?
I guess I’m privileged. I’ve been all over the world and I’ve met all kinds of celebrities, so it’s really cool, but at the same time, it’s super annoying. Mom’s a supermodel, so people always gush about how gorgeous she is. Don’t get me wrong, mom is a beautiful and exotic woman (really exotic since she’s actually a Korghetian), but everyone acts like my spots are some sort of embarrassment. Richard, my stepfather, is a film director, which is pretty neat. I just learned that some of the shots in his artsy sci-fi film actually used live footage of mom’s spaceship. How cool is that?

Would you ever want to hang out with your author? If so, what would you do together?
Maybe. She seems pretty cool and open-minded. In fact, she’s a lot like my friend Bethany (don’t tell her I said this, but I think she wrote Bethany to be like her, but cooler). I know she’d totally hang out at MochaMoka with us because she’s a coffee addict. But I’d probably ask her why she had to go and give me these spots. I know why she made me tall. She’s tall, so she made me taller than her. Kind of rotten to just pile these things on, isn’t it?

If you could have a super power, what would it be, and why?
Well, I kind of have the most powerful relic in the galaxy woven into my genetic makeup, but I’m not sure that’s a super power. Especially since I have yet to figure out if this is truly a good thing or not. So I’ll say invisibility. When you’re weird looking and famous, it’s difficult to stay anonymous.

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?
When people think they can say anything because I’m “famous.” I have feelings too.
Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
She did a pretty good job, though I think she spent far too much time talking about my appearance.

What is your idea of a perfect day?
Vegging out and binge watching television with the ringer off on my phone.

What is your greatest fear?
That I’m not going to live up to the absolutely insanely crazy high expectation that I’m somehow going to save the galaxy.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An astronaut, if you must know. Talk about irony.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
I’d run myself ragged trying to have one last moment with everyone I hold dear to my heart so that I can tell them how much they mean to me and thank them for being in my life.

What is the one food you can’t live without?
New York style pizza. Mom would tell you that Italy is the only place to get good pizza, but she’s dead wrong. New York pizza is the only pizza.

Coffee With Characters with Derrick Porter from Wolf’s Challenge

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself! Tell us who you are and what you do! Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role? What do you do for a living? How old are you?
1. Tell us about your story. What is it about and what role do you play?
Hey all. My name is Derrick Porter. I’m a business lawyer, recovering workaholic, and most importantly, a shifter wolf. I live in Great Oaks, Virginia. My story began when I fell for a fiery, red-headed artist named Sydney who wanted to keep me in the friend zone. She didn’t know I was a wolf shifter, didn’t really know me at all, but she was convinced I was a player. My main goal in Christina Lynn Lambert’s debut novel Wolf’s Challenge was to convince Sydney she would be the only woman for me. It was a challenge for me to be patient and not ask Sydney for everything I wanted too soon.

Wolf’s Challenge is the first in the Stranger Creatures series. There’s a lot of weird creatures out there in the world, and crazy things can happen when people discover their world isn’t as plain vanilla as they thought, but don’t worry, each book in the Stranger Creatures series can be read as a standalone. Christina hates cliffhangers but she loves sexy alpha men. I’m a wolf shifter so I’m strong and powerful in both wolf and human form, but I’m not a caveman about it. I’m pretty clever too and I use that to my advantage whenever and wherever I can.

2. Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?
In wolf form, I’m larger than the average wolf. My wolf’s teeth are razor sharp and my senses are off the charts, except my sense of smell which is still above average. As a man, I don’t guess my features are that notable. I’m about 6 feet tall and muscular (but not steroid gym rat huge). My hair is black and my eyes are grayish blue but they get darker depending on my mood.
3. Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?
No birthmarks or tattoos. My left ankle bears a faded brand of the letter e just below the faint scars from an injury that never fully healed. The brand and the scars are the result of the anti-shifter group called the Equalizers finding me at the weakest, most vulnerable moment of my life.
4. Would you ever want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do together?
Yes, I think I’d enjoy hanging out with Christina. We could watch X-Files together or maybe hit a comic book convention and score a bag full of new books, or we could go for a hike in one of Virginia’s beautiful parks.
5. If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?
The ability to teleport would be great. Long drives and plane rides annoy the wolf side of me.
6. What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?
I hate liars and I especially hate traitors. People who betray their shifter brethren get dealt with –torture, shifter jail, or death. My vote is for a fair amount of the first two before sending a traitor to the bottom of the ocean in tiny little pieces.
7. What would I love the most about you?
I’m a pretty decent guy, or try to be anyway. I screw up from time to time but I would give my life to protect the people I love, whether they’re shifters or regular humans. I’m not perfect but I’m loyal.
8. What would I hate the most about you?
Some humans hate shifters just because we’re different. They think we’ll try to use our strength and abilities to take over the world or something, but I hope you’ll understand that most shifters just want to be left alone to be what they are in peace. Shifters don’t want to take over the world, we just want to keep it from being destroyed.
9. Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
Christina really got inside my head, a little too much for my liking to be honest, when she wrote about me. My strengths, my weaknesses, my fears, and doubts, yeah, she put all that stuff down on paper for everyone to see.
10. What is your idea of a perfect day?
A whole day in bed with Sydney where we have nowhere to be, no distractions, and no disruptions.

11. What is your greatest fear?
Losing the people I love. Rabbit shifters are a close second, though.

12. Someone is secretly in love with you.  Who is it and how do you feel about that?
Sydney’s the only woman I want. Nobody else has a chance in hell with me.

13. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A football player or a helicopter pilot.
14. If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
I’d make sure I spent the day with Sydney and Angel along with my best friend Jack and his wife Carly, who is actually Sydney’s best friend. It wouldn’t matter where we were or what we did, just as long as we were together and I got to say goodbye. I can’t think about this anymore though. I’ve lost too many people and I can’t imagine being separated from Sydney and sweet little Angel.
15. What is the one food you can’t live without?
Nachos with chili, cheese, and jalapeños.
16. If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?
Maybe Karl Urban or Dave Franco. They look a little like me, I think. Here’s a picture below if you want an idea of what I look like.

Christina says to tell you that if you want a peek at the story or if you want to learn more about her you can check out her blog site at http://christinalynnlambertwordpress.com and her Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/christinalynnlambert

Coffee With Characters Eddie from Written in Blood

Nathan

Thank you so much for joining us today!  Please introduce yourself!

Hey, Ember.  And thank you for finally giving me my due.  It’s not often that the real reason people read books get some attention.  Yeah, sure, the author has the job of putting our words down, but we all know that it’s us characters that truly run the show.  Am I right?

Tell us who you are and what you do!

I’ve always been called Eddie, and nothing else.  Well, that’s not completely true, I suppose.  My dad always had some rather choice names for me whenever I messed up.  Or if he was high or drunk; or both on some occasions.  But I don’t really want to go into that right now.  I’ll save that for another time.   And as for what I do?  I kill people.  Not for a living, mind you.  It’s more of a therapeutic thing for me.  It kinda helps push the monsters back into the shadows, for a time, anyway.

Are you the main character in the story or a supporting role?

Well, as much as it pains me to say it, I share the lead with my nemesis, Detective Collins.  Although I think Nathan gave way too many chapters to Ken.  He should have focused a little more on me.  After all, if it weren’t for me, there really wouldn’t be much of a story.  I mean, it IS a crime novel.  If I didn’t do my part, there’d be no need for Ken.

How old are you?

That isn’t discussed in the book.  Just one more of my points about Nathan not focusing enough on me.  But that’s neither here nor there.  I’m somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty years old.  Can’t be completely certain, as I haven’t seen a bio on me anywhere in Nathan’s notes.  Not like he has for Ken, that’s for sure.  I drive the story, but does he try, even a little, to focus on me?  Hardly.

Sorry, when it comes to Ken, I just can’t seem to let go of my anger.  I’ll try to stay focused.

Tell us about your story.  What is it about and what role do you play?

As I mentioned before, it’s a crime novel.  Ken, excuse me, Detective Collins, is just finishing up his rookie year in the Homicide Division of the Foley Police Department, when his world comes crashing down on him.  Not only has his dad’s illness returned, but Ken begins having some physical and emotional issues.  And thanks to his meddling Christian partner, Senior Detective John Filcher, he starts thinking about his eternal security.

As for me, I’ve been locked away for years, watching and waiting for a chance to escape and exact some revenge.  Ken is the main reason I’ve been out of the limelight for so long, and I’ve grown tired of seeing him get to be free and live whatever kind of life he’s wanted.  Needless to say, I’ve planned for a long time to get back at him.  I’ve wanted nothing more than to knock him off his feet and see how well he adapts to having his world turned upside down and inside out.  And that’s just what I do.  After I get free from my imprisonment, I set my plan in motion, and I start killing prostitutes.  That goes back to the therapeutic thing I was talking about earlier.

Anyway, Ken and John must catch me if they want the killings to end.  I certainly won’t stop on my own.  Along the way, I eliminate some undercover cops, and an operative of the Governor’s ‘Special Crimes Division’.

Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

That would probably be my eyes.  There’s nothing really distinguishable about them, per se, other than the coldness locked inside them.  You aren’t likely to get a caring glance or see love in them.  You certainly wouldn’t find them too pleasant if you were on the receiving end of my cold glare.  Not unless you want to feel a chill run down your spine.  John can tell you about that, if you ever interview him.

Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

No.  I have considered getting a tattoo, but I’m too afraid of needles.

Would you ever want to hang out with your author?  If so, what would you do together?

I wouldn’t have a problem hanging out with Nathan, but I can’t say the same thing for him.  I don’t think he’d enjoy any of the fun I could show him.  He’s too much of a goody two-shoes.  At least he is since he found God.

If you could have a super power, what would it be, and why?

Hmm.  Most definitely invisibility.  Imagine what I could get away with if no one could see me!

What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

People!  Do you really want to go there?  Ok.  A lot of people don’t show the real them.  They wear a mask to hide their true identity.  They act one way to your face, but become someone totally different when the chance arises.  At least I let my victims know up front what kind of person I am.  I’m a straight shooter, figuratively, and literally, as you’ll see when you read the book.

What would I love the most about you?

Probably nothing.  I’m a cold and calloused individual, for the most part.  Comes from the upbringing, I would say.  I don’t know how anybody could be different than I am, if they had to grow up as me.

What would I hate most about you?

Pretty much everything.  See the previous answer for clarification.

Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

No.  I think he took a little too much artistic license in portraying me and my emotions.  Maybe if he spent a day alone with me, and he managed to survive, then he might be able to better articulate the depth of my anger and cold-heartedness.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

Perfect day?  Is there such a thing?  Not where I come from.  But just for the sake of an interesting interview, I’ll say that the perfect day would be being able to do whatever I wanted, without the fear of consequences.  Who wouldn’t want that kind of freedom?  I bet if you took a poll right now, most of your fans would agree with me.  Go ahead, I’ll wait…

…See?  What’d I tell you?  Never underestimate the depravity of the average person.  That’s what I always say.

What is your greatest fear?

That’s an easy one.  Getting locked away again, for good.  The first time was bad enough, but I don’t think even I could deal with another extended stay in solitary confinement.  In there, I have no way to release those sadistic little monsters running around in my head.  They’re enough to drive a guy crazy.  Or do you think I’m already there?  You can be honest with me.  I can take it.

May I ask you a question, Ember?  If you’re crazy, do you think you know you are, or does someone need to tell you?  And if they told you, would it even matter?  You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.  Just thought I’d ask.

Someone is secretly in love with you.  Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Samantha Adamson.  That would be absolutely perfect.  It would go so far into helping mess Ken’s life up.  He’s so smitten with her, I think it would actually destroy him.  Of course, I’ve thought more than once about doing away with her, just to see Ken’s reaction.  Did I?  Well, you’ll just have to read the book to find out.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Normal.  My life was too much of a wreck to even think about dreaming of growing up.  Now Ken, he had plenty of time to think about having a normal life and dream about what he would be when he grew up.  I’ve had plenty of envy over him where that is concerned.  I guess maybe I did dream of having a life like his.  He’s always been pretty much carefree and happy-go-lucky; even considering some of the hard times he did have early on in life.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

As much as I could get away with before getting caught!  Oh, you want something specific?  Well, I’ve thought about taking out someone famous.  Who wouldn’t matter, as long as they were high profile.  Even now, just thinking about it, I can imagine my knife blade sliding into their skin; the blood pooling around the handle.  Can you smell their fear?  Feel their quivering skin beneath your touch?  Can you see their soul leaving their body?  Stick with me and I can show you so much more.

What is the one food you can’t live without?

I haven’t been in control of much of my life, so I’ve never really thought about it before.

If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Who would be cast?  Probably some two-bit character actor not worth the industry minimum.  Who should be cast?  Pacino, De Niro or Hopkins would be my choice.  Unfortunately, they’re all too old.  Apart from that, it wouldn’t really matter.  I’m probably dead, or they wouldn’t be making a movie.  Would they?

You’ve had enough?  Okay, well, thanks for your time.  And thanks again for talking with the only one deserving the honor.  I’ll be watching…I mean, I’ll see you around.

Coffee With Characters… Err This should be interesting! The characters (All of Them) of Judge by the Cover

1. Hi—okay, sorry before I start this interview, I really must ask. Why are there three of you?

Oh, hi. My name is Tracy. I’m just here to be the buffer between those two. *points at a boy and a girl glaring at each other with crossed arms*

2. But why do they need—
Trust me. They need a buffer.

3. Oh. Okay then. Well, thank you so much for joining us today. Please intro-duce yourself!

The Girl: I’ll start. I’m Haruna Mitsukai. I’m 17 years old and I’m the main char-acter of the story. I’m a student in my final year at Shady Glenn Private Acade-my. I’m Head Girl (which is kind of like student president at regular schools) and I’m aiming to be valedictorian. One of my main goals is getting into the Universi-ty of—
The Boy: She just asked who you are, not for your life story.
Haruna: Shut up! Why are you even here?
Tracy: Stop it, you guys. *gives a deep sigh* This guy over here is Ryu Debiru. He’s the story antagonist.
Ryu: Antagonist? I’m the main character in this story too!
Haruna: But why? That’s what I’d like to know.
Tracy: Yeesh. I’ll take over from here. *looks over with a smile* I’m Tracy Hasan and I’m one of Haruna’s best friends. I also go to the Academy. Ryu does too.

4. Let’s step back for a moment. What is your story about?

Tracy: So the book is called Judge by the Cover which is part of the Hafu Sans Halo series. It’s a YA/New Adult series.
Haruna: And the first book is about this assignment we have to work on for our English class. And it’s a major assignment—like super important. But naturally, it’s impossible to get anything done with this guy.
Ryu: I’d gouge my own eye out with this icepick before spending five minutes with her to be honest.
Tracy: Ahem. Just to be clear, no eyes were lost in the making of this book.
Haruna: Am I the only one wondering why he randomly carries around an icepick?

judge

5. Wait, I’m curious about something else. What does “Hafu Sans Halo” mean?

Ryu: Well, “hafu” is a word meaning “half.” We’re both half Japanese so I’m guessing that has something to do with it.
Haruna: You’d have to read the book and come to your own conclusions.

6. Wow. I guess being half Japanese means you have some things in common?
Haruna: No way!
Ryu: Not. At. All.

7. Can you tell us about one of your most distinguishable features?

Haruna: I’ll go first. I’m an honour student. I have advanced levels in piano and violin. I play the clarinet in the school band. I tutor. At my church I’m a Youth Minister—
Tracy: Haruna, she means physical features. *turns to smile* Like for example, if you look closely Haruna’s got freckles on her nose—
Ryu: Also her eyes are like this weird blue-green colour like that gross algae that kills people.
Haruna: Excuse me? What do you mean “weird?” You’re weird! When’s the last time you combed your hair? It’s a mess. *looks back* It’s always a mess.
Tracy: *drags palm across face*

8. Do you have any birthmarks or tattoos?

Tracy: Oh I don’t have any tattoos. I’d like to get one but I definitely can’t. My parents wouldn’t like it and it’s against my religion, actually. But I’ve done henna once.
Haruna: Yeah, I’m not allowed to get them either. I don’t want one anyway. On-ly try-hards get tattoos. Piercings too.
Ryu: So you’re calling me a try-hard now?
Haruna: He has, like, a zillion ear piercings.
Tracy: Hey Ryu, do you have tattoos?
Ryu: None of your business what I’ve got.
Haruna: See! He’s rude, isn’t he?

9. Er, how about I change the topic? Oh here’s a fun one! Would you ev-er want to go hang out with your author? If so, what would you do to-gether?

Tracy: No. She’s way older than us.
Haruna: Maybe she can give us advice for university though?
Ryu: Everything with you is school.
10. If you could have a super power what would it be, and why?

Tracy: I’d like to be able to fly. That would be pretty sweet!
Haruna: Hmm…I think invisibility would be great sometimes.
Ryu: She’s lying. She loves attention.
Haruna: He’s just jealous because he’s already invisible.
Tracy: Haruna!
Haruna: Okay, fine. I’ll stop.
Ryu: *ignoring her* Anyway. I’m pretty much able to read minds. It’s not a super power, just intuition I guess. And I have a 4th degree black belt so…yeah, I’m good. But I think it would be cool to be able to teleport.

11. What is your biggest pet peeve when dealing with others?

Tracy: I don’t have any.
Haruna: Some people are just really dumb. I can’t stand idiots.
Ryu: Me neither. I also dislike posers, and that’s pretty much everyone around here. Plus, people can never seem to say my name right.
Haruna: Heaven forbid you mispronounce this guy’s name. Geez.
12. What would I love the most about you?

Haruna: I’m passionate about anything I set my mind to. I never give up!
Ryu: I tell it like it is.
Tracy: I bring the comic relief, but I tell it like it is too.
13. What would I hate the most about you?

Haruna: Hm, I’ll admit I stress out over small things sometimes.
Ryu: She’s somehow both a drama queen and a teacher’s pet.
Haruna: We’re answering for ourselves, idiot!
Ryu: See? Exclamation marks for everything.
Haruna: Get me out of here. Please.
Tracy: I’m just going to go on a limb here and say everyone loves me. Even the haters.
14. Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?

Haruna: I think so.
Ryu: Mostly.
Tracy: I feel like she made me look more boy crazy than I really am.
Haruna: You are pretty boy crazy though.
Tracy: But who isn’t though? We’re teenagers!
Ryu: Stereotype.
15. What is your idea of a perfect day?

Ryu: A day when everyone just leaves me the hell alone.
Haruna: A day spent with my friends and my boyfriend. After all my homework and chores are done, of course.
Tracy: Same answer. Minus the boyfriend part. Ugh. Forever alone….
16. What is your greatest fear?

Haruna: Getting assigned to work on something with this guy.
Ryu: Whatever.
Tracy: That’s a good question. I think I’d be embarrassed to say.
Ryu: Yeah, I’m obviously not answering this question either.
17. Someone is secretly in love with you. Who is it and how do you feel about that?

Tracy: Oh my gosh—please let it be Samuel Hope! Hottest guy ever!
Haruna: He’s too old for you.*looks back* He graduated when we were juniors.
Ryu: Some girls secretly like me apparently, but I couldn’t care less. It would be a waste of my time and theirs.
Haruna: Gross. Why would anyone like you?
Tracy: *leans in to whisper* Pretty sure these two are secretly in love with each other.
Haruna: TRACY! EW—NO!
Ryu: Not a chance.

18. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Tracy: An actress. I want to star in something cool and edgy like Vampire Dia-ries.
Haruna: Do you mean when I was really little or now? When I was little I don’t think I ever thought about it.
Ryu: I’ve always wanted to be like my dad. Now I’m not so sure.
Haruna: What’s that supposed to mean?
Ryu: It means exactly what you think it does.
Haruna & Tracy: …
19. If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do to-day?

Tracy: Wow, this is deep.
Haruna: Yeah I agree. I don’t really know? Go shopping?
Tracy: But what if you can’t use all the stuff? I think I’d rather throw a huge par-ty.
Ryu: I’d probably do the same thing I usually do. Since the day I die could be any day.
Tracy: Well… that was rather cryptic, Ryu.
Ryu: Good. It should be.

20. What is the one food you can’t live without?

Haruna: Waffles!
Tracy: I’m a sucker for junk food. Also my mom’s naan is delish.
Ryu: I like the food from Long’s Restaurant, but I can’t afford to be too picky. I live with six other guys.
21. If they turned the book into a movie, who would be cast to play you?

Tracy: I’d play myself! But I really like Yasmine Al-Bustami. I think she could rock my short hair too.
Ryu: For me, maybe Kato Keisuke? He’s a Japanese actor.
Tracy: But don’t you need someone who speaks fluent English?
Ryu: I don’t care who plays me. As long as it’s not Keanu Reeves. Although… I’m pretty sure Emma Stone could play Haruna.
Haruna: Oh aren’t you just the comedian today?
Tracy: Who do you think would play you, Haruna?
Haruna: Katie Chang or Reina Triendl I think.
