The giant Elvis sign on the outside should have been the first clue that something was wrong. The chapel was awful. It was totally garish and everything was over the top. The pepto bismo pink walls had me cringing.

“This place is great,” Rissa laughed and I looked at her confused.

“Uh, princess? Are you seeing what I’m seeing?”

“Yeah, it’s completely hideous. It’s great.” She giggled and I couldn’t help but laugh along with her.

“It is completely hideous.” I said looking around at all the pink. That was the only way to describe it. The 1970s track lighting didn’t do it any favors. The pink shag carpeting just sealed the deal. It looked like a Mary Kay spokeswoman decorated the entire place.

There was a couple ahead of us and I was sure they were both heavily intoxicated because they were half asleep sitting on a bench leaning on each other.

I chuckled to myself when the little old lady with coke bottle glasses, and hair so gray it looked purple, came out and called their names three times before she walked over to them and smacked the guy across the knee with her cane, hard.

“Ow, what?” He looked around before waking his companion. They stumbled into the chapel and heavy organ music started playing.

I shook my head in defeat. Well if I had the weirdest bucket list on the planet this would be at the top and I could check that shit off right now.

“Welcome to Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. How can I help you?” A smoke roughened voice asked.

I looked down at the woman, but before I could get a word out Rissa bounced over.

“We wanna get married.” She giggled.

“I kind of figured that dear. It is what we do here.” The old woman smiled at her.

She hefted out a huge binder and began flipping through to the “Last minute” section. It was literally labeled that and I had to suppress a chuckle. It should really have been the drunk and irresponsible section, but I doubt it would have fit on the little tab on the side.

“Do you want pictures?” The woman asked.

“Of course,” we said at the same time and laughed.

“We can have digital prints done in an hour for a fee.” The woman said and I nodded.

We hammered out the rest of the details and waited. It wasn’t long before the woman called us back and I got a good look at the chapel itself. I did my best to control my laughter but it just wouldn’t stop. The curtains and all the decorations were a deep royal purple. It looked like a Barbie dream house threw up in there and the entire place clashed.

What really got me laughing though, was the wrinkled old man in the black wig decked out like the oldest Elvis impersonator of all time. Rissa looked over at me with wide eyes and burst into a fit of laughter herself.

I don’t know what I had been expecting, but the purple and gold wall hangings and the little old man with enough bling on his suit to moonlight as a disco ball on 70’s night at the club had not been it. Rissa was gasping for breath as she laughed with her whole body and I couldn’t believe we were doing that there.

We were there though and it was what we both wanted so we continued down the aisle and when we finally quit laughing Elvis began the ceremony.

“Uh-huh thank you very much,” he rasped in his best imitation of Elvis. I saw the little old woman taking pictures all around us and she rolled her eyes. I nearly lost it again but when I looked over at Rissa she had a beautiful smile on her face and all thoughts of laughter left. She looked truly happy and I didn’t want to do anything to ruin it.

We made it through the vows without so much as a giggle and when it came time for the rings I pulled out the diamond and she gasped, shaking her head.

“Cole, I told you to get the other one,” she whispered looking conflicted.

“I saw you looking at this one so I got it. I knew you wanted this one,” I replied softly and she smiled.

“Okay,” she sighed and we finished the ceremony.

I never felt better than when the little old Elvis told me to kiss the bride. It was the perfect wedding and even with the horrible décor and cheesy Elvis impersonator it was the perfect end to our crazy night.

Excerpt from There’s Something About Vegas

Hey there awesome possums! We are 4 days out from the release of There’s Something About Vegas. So, I figured I would give you a little taste of the book! I’ll will be reading it later tonight on my facebook page as well! Check it out HERE

PROLOGUE

RISSA

Groaning at the injustice of the light pouring in through the blinds, I blinked rapidly. The opulent room was not one that I was familiar with. The bedroom of the suite alone was bigger than my apartment, and I had no memory of how I got there.

I left LA on a whim and drove to Vegas. Well, it wasn’t a whim exactly, more like a poorly executed escape plan. I remembered checking into the crappy hotel room off the strip before hitting the club at the beginning of the night. Everything beyond that was a hazy bunch of nothing.

A groan that wasn’t mine rent the room, but that wasn’t all that startled me. A very male and very well-muscled forearm snaked out over my stomach. My mortification was swift—I never did stuff like that. I took a peak under the soft white comforter and blanched. Oh no! What have I done? Scooting out of the bed carefully, I was able to get out from under the arm without waking the male attached to it.

Searching the room, I found my clothes scattered across the bedroom floor. I’m not too proud to say that I ran terrified into the guest bathroom and put my clothes back on, and I’m not even ashamed to admit that I left that hotel without a word or a backward glance.

It had been a spectacular night and this girl was off the charts amazing. She was sweet, beautiful, funny in a cute innocent way, and I never wanted this night to end. I did something impulsive, which was so not like me.

“Let’s get married,” I blurted. A little voice in the back of my head was laughing at me. It was ridiculous really. There was no way this gorgeous woman would ever do something as wild and crazy as marry a complete stranger. I saw a moment of indecision cross her features before a defiant look replaced it.

“You know what? I have the right to be a little crazy if I want to. My mom has been married five times and none of those marriages were any good. Why not marry a complete stranger on a whim?” She smiled victoriously and I grabbed her hand and drug her to the elevator before she could change her mind.

“Cole? Cole! We’re naked,” she giggled and I stopped dead. Looking down for the first time my face got hot as I realized she was right.

“Shit, sorry.” I ducked my head embarrassed. I went to grab our clothes and hand them to her. Shock must have registered on my face as she grabbed me around the back of my neck and kissed me, hard. She looked at me and smiled wide.

“Definitely worth it. Let’s do this.” She took the clothes from me as I stood there in stunned silence. She got dressed as I watched her. She looked over at me with a curious frown and it finally occurred to me that she was completely dressed in her black mini dress and I was still naked and staring.

Finally, I remembered to get dressed and drug her towards the elevator, but she didn’t need me to drag her, she was just as excited as I was at the prospect of doing something this crazy.

Flash Fiction Never in all my Life

Something was wrong.

Horribly f*cking wrong.

I woke up, my throat felt as if I had swallowed glass and there wasn’t a drink in sight. Never in all my life had I been as terrified as I had that moment. Despite the opulent room and four poster bed, I knew I had royally screwed up going to that old Chinese restaurant. My stomach chose that moment to growl, loudly. That only emphasized how truly f*cked I was. I hadn’t even succeeded in getting much needed food for poor MacKenzie.

I was a horrible mom and she wasn’t even born yet. I sighed and looked around the dimly lit room. I didn’t bother getting up and checking the door. I already new it would be locked. The fact that I was still breathing, although laboriously, terrified me even more. It meant only one thing Roger wasn’t done with me yet.

A noise had me rolling over and pretending to still be unconscious. If they knew that I was awake there is no telling what he would do to us. I made an attempt at controlling my breathing as a small hand touched my shoulder and I heard the soft voice of my savior. “Come on Melissa. Wake up. We have to go, now.”
Hope you enjoyed this weeks flash! Gotta say that I’m enjoying this darker side of my writing! Check back next week to see who came to Melissa and MacKenzies rescue!

Flash Fiction Time!

I was sitting in the alley behind that old Chinese restaurant on sixth. The smell of mushu pork and Kung pow chicken filled my nostrils and caused my stomach to growl loudly. I knew I shouldn’t be there. Kim had warned me to stay out of sight. She told me he knew what I did and he was looking for me. I couldn’t help it though. I was starving. I looked down at the huge lump where my flat stomach used to be and I sighed.

“Hold on, MacKenzie. I’m gonna take care of you just hold on for mamma.”

“Did you think I wouldn’t find you?” A deep sinister voice said from behind me and I flinched. “I’m not the only one looking for you my dear Melissa.”

He rubbed his hand down my hair and brought it to his nose. I don’t know if he thought he was being seductive but he groaned and I nearly vomited right there in front of him. I used to think this man was sexy. Hell, this was his baby I was carrying. The only good thing to ever come out of meeting one of the most powerful men in Maryland.

There was something seductive about a man in power. There was something seductive about bringing him to his knees. I had done that. I had done it multiple times in multiple different ways. He always said I was his favorite. I think that’s why he’s here. I wasn’t the only one he played with. I was just the only one who ever defied him.

“We could have stayed together. You would have everything. Look at you now, as big as a house looking for scraps to feed the bastard that will never be born. You chose this life over me?” He raged As he reached around me and squeezed my throat with enough force to kill me. I coughed and sputtered as he turned me around to look in his sapphire eyes. I used to love his eyes, but now they were glacial. I clawed at his hands as white clouded my vision.

“Yes, and I’d do it again,” were the last words to leave my mouth before blackness took over.
